Red Rhino 5000+ brings British crushing power to the Cayman Islands

Red Rhino 5000+ Crusher at a construction site in the cayman islands

When excavating hard, dense limestone is part of preparing a new residential development, what comes out of the ground can quickly become a problem. For Garland Development Ltd in Grand Cayman, however, excavated rocks are being turned into a valuable resource with the help of a Red Rhino 5000+ crusher.

The Cayman Islands-based property development company is currently developing a residential subdivision in the district of East End, Grand Cayman. Preparing the site for roads and utilities involves excavating substantial quantities of hard limestone, leaving the company with considerable amounts of excess rock.

Rather than treating this material as waste and importing aggregate for the development, Garland Development purchased a Red Rhino 5000+ to process the excavated material and reuse it where suitable.

The approach makes sense in the Cayman Islands, where the availability of locally quarried aggregate is limited. Aggregate is expensive on the island and some is imported from neighbouring countries, making the ability to produce usable material from rock already being excavated on the development particularly valuable. For Garland Development, every tonne of suitable aggregate produced on site represents material that does not have to be purchased and transported to the island.

Compact machine, substantial capability

The choice of the 5000+ was driven by the practical demands of the development. Garland Development wanted a crusher compact enough to move around the site while still being capable of handling the hard material encountered during excavation.

That combination is central to the design of the 5000+. The machine has a 500mm x 250mm jaw aperture and instant hydraulic jaw adjustment allows the output size to be set between 20mm and 100mm. At just 1,665mm wide, it can access sites where space is restricted.

The 5000+ also features a hydraulically driven vibrating feeder, operated via the machine’s wireless remote-control handset. Dust suppression is fitted as standard, using fine water spray nozzles that operate from standard domestic hose pressure.

For Garland Development, the ability to move the crusher around the subdivision and operate it alongside existing equipment was a key consideration. A much larger crusher would have brought additional logistical demands, whereas the 5000+ provides the mobility and compact footprint required for the project.

“Projects like this are a great example of where a compact crusher can make a real difference to the way a development is carried out,” said Lesley Perrin, Sales Manager at Red Rhino Crushers. “The team at Garland Development had a clear need to process the limestone being excavated on site, while keeping the equipment mobile enough to work around the development.

“The 5000+ is well suited to that kind of application, giving them the ability to produce usable aggregate from material they already have on site. It is also particularly rewarding to see a British-built Red Rhino machine working in the Cayman Islands and helping a local developer reduce its reliance on imported aggregate.”

Making the most of material already on site

The project demonstrates the practical value of processing excavated material where it is generated. Instead of sending rock away and bringing replacement aggregate back, the development team can put suitable excavated material back to work within the scheme.

For a company operating on an island where aggregate can be costly to source, that offers a significant commercial advantage while reducing the amount of material being transported to and from the site.

There was another reason the 5000+ appealed to Garland Development. Red Rhino machines are designed and manufactured in Britain, and as a Cayman Islands company operating in a British Overseas Territory, the company values the opportunity to support British manufacturing when there is a strong commercial and practical case for doing so.

For Red Rhino, this is another example of how compact crushing equipment can deliver practical value well beyond the UK, wherever space, material costs and site logistics make on-site processing a compelling proposition.
